KNOW THE FACTS

What is the difference between low and very low blood sugar?

Hypoglycemia is low blood glucose—or low blood sugar—that is below the healthy range. This is usually when blood glucose is less than 70 mg/dL. If hypoglycemia is mild or moderate, it can be treated with fast-acting carbohydrates like hard candies, juice, or glucose tablets.

Severe hypoglycemia is very low blood sugar (<54 mg/dL) and is considered a medical emergency. It requires another person to help you recover. You may be too weak or confused to eat or drink anything and you could pass out.
